Making it at home is cheaper than buying it, even at the top of the market. A daily café matcha latte costs more per year than the most expensive tin you are likely to buy.

A fair price for good everyday matcha is about $1.00 a gram — $30 for a 30 g tin. Aiya’s 100 g bag comes in at $0.70, and its 30 g tin at $1.17. Below $0.40 you are buying something made for cooking or lattes rather than for whisking. Above $2.50 you are paying for a specific farm and cultivar.
What each shop charges
Every shop we track sells matcha at both ends of the range. Picking a cheaper shop matters less than picking a cheaper tin within a shop. Rocky’s is the clearest case: its 20 gram tins run from $1.00 to $4.40 a gram, and the one it leads with is not the cheap end. Cheap matcha: what you get under $0.40 a gram
About one matcha listing in five costs less than $0.40 a gram. Almost all of it is one of two things:
- Sweetened latte mix. Sugar is usually the first ingredient. These run under $0.20 a gram and they are not really matcha prices, because most of what you are buying is sugar.
- Culinary powder in large bags. Made for baking and blending, where the milk and sugar cover a rougher, more bitter powder. Perfectly good for that.
Neither is a bad buy for its purpose. Just don’t whisk them and expect the sweet, thick cup that good matcha gives you.

If you drink matcha lattes daily and don’t want to think about it, Target’s Jade Leaf Barista at $0.26 a gram is 52 cents a bowl — a quarter of the mid-market price.
The expensive end

At the top, you are paying for a named farm, a named cultivar, competition-grade leaf, and a very small tin. Small tins are always the most expensive way to buy — the same shops sell the same quality in 40 g and 100 g for far less per bowl.
Why matcha costs more than other tea
Three reasons, and they compound:
- The leaf is shaded for about three weeks before picking. That cuts the yield and adds labour.
- It is stone-ground, slowly. A traditional mill produces around 40 g an hour.
- You consume the whole leaf. With sencha you steep it and throw it away; with matcha you drink all of it, so a gram goes much less far.
On top of that, the price of the raw leaf has roughly tripled at auction in two years as global demand has outrun supply.

About $2.00 at mid-market prices. Under $1.00 with a value tin, $5.00 or more with a single-cultivar one.
Is expensive matcha worth it?
For drinking straight, the jump from culinary powder to a proper drinking grade is very noticeable. The jump from $1.00 to $3.00 a gram is much subtler, and it is mostly buying provenance.
What is a good price for ceremonial matcha?
Around $1.00 a gram. Be aware that “ceremonial” is not a regulated term — it appears on tins from $0.60 to $2.80 a gram.
Why is matcha getting more expensive?
Demand has outgrown supply, and the shaded leaf that becomes matcha now pays farmers about three times what ordinary tea leaf pays. Prices at auction roughly tripled between 2024 and 2026.
Is Costco matcha any good?
For lattes, yes, and it is extraordinarily cheap. For whisking and drinking plain, buy a specialist tin.
How long does a tin last?
A 30 g tin is fifteen bowls — about two weeks at one a day. Matcha oxidises once opened, so buy a size you will finish in a month or two.
