The Matcha Index is an independent price-and-data site about Japanese tea sold in the West, run by Fuki Narita from Japan.
The premise is simple: matcha marketing runs on adjectives, so this site runs on numbers. We collect every listing from the public store feeds of major matcha brands — prices, net weights, cultivars, harvest claims — and publish what the data says: price per gram, price per cup, and which label claims actually predict quality. Where possible we add what verified buyers report in their own words.
How the site works
- Every price has a date. Prices change; every figure on this site is a snapshot with a collection date attached.
- Full store coverage, not a selection. When we cover a brand, we pull every product in its store feed, so the statistics can’t cherry-pick.
- The data is public. The datasets behind our articles are published on the Data page so anyone can check the math.
- Independence. No brand pays for placement or reviews, and no seller sees our figures before publication. This site currently carries no affiliate links — every price and recommendation here is written with nothing to earn from it. If that changes we will say so on this page and label the links; see our affiliate disclosure.
Who writes this
Fuki Narita studied agriculture at Hokkaido University, in northern Japan. That background is why this site reaches for Japanese agricultural statistics rather than English tea blogs: the wholesale prices, production volumes and shading standards quoted in these articles come from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and from Japanese trade bodies, read in the original.
What the site measures is what the public record will support: what a gram costs, how a shop prices one tea against another on its own shelf, and what sellers do and don’t disclose. Whether a particular tea is worth drinking belongs to the people who drink it.
